He Is Baackkk! Welcome Ganapati Baappa

This is a weekend of Absolute Joy. The great beloved Ganapati Baappa comes back to us this weekend.  Everyone, especially the child in everyone, can’t wait to welcome Him. No Roop, no Form of The Divine is as loved as Ganapati. Every Indian household will be full of Holy Joy for the next ten days.

And the first question has already been answered. The look of King of Laal-Baag, Mumbai’s most famous Ganapati, has been revealed:

The backdrop is Chandra-Yaan 2, India’s second mission to the Moon that was launched in July. Fits perfectly because as the Sacred Atharva-Sheersham says to Ganesh,

  • The entire Universe has been created from You; the entire Universe resides inside You; the entire Universe dissipates into You;

What we celebrate is Ganapati’s मनुस्वरूपं , or the humanly seen/imagined form of Ganesh. The earliest description of Ganapati is given in Shlok II.23.1 of the Rg-Ved, the oldest religious text extant:

ॐ गणानां त्वां गणपतिं हवामहे कविम् कवीनां उपश्रवस्तम् ज्येष्ट राजं ब्रह्मणां

We sing praises of You, the Gana-Pati of the Gan, the poet of all poets, the greatest among all intellects

Besides being the giver of intellect, Ganesh is worshiped as destroyer of all obstacles:

वक्रतुण्ड् महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ  निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्व कार्येषु सर्वदा
You are of a curved trunk, a huge body and with radiance that is like 10 million suns;
God, please make my path always free of obstacles in all tasks.

May Ganesh bring you Svasti, divine peace & happiness, and remove all obstacles in your life & the lives of all dear to you.

स्वस्ति अस्तु भवतु

May You Attain Svasti

गणपतिबाप्पा मोरया

Editor’s PS: Below is a clip of the Sacred Atharva-Sheersham, the poem in praise of Ganapati composed by Atharvan, a son of the Creator Brahma-Dev. Absolutely correct & rigorous pronunciation is critical in Sanskrut and this clip is as rigorous as we have heard. Listen to it.
